Each time I write,
it feels ___ I’m advancing ___ new territory,

regarding other thinkers / colleagues –
I’m not naturely polemical but:
true deconstructive gestures: destabilizecauseanxietyorhurt –
so, every time

there are moments of feAr!
Not during writing.
Actually, I write _ a feeling _ necessity,

Nothing intimidates!
I say into said.
That is to say,
when not writing,
a strange moment: going ↔ asleep.
When I have a nap → fall asleep.
At that moment – With Half Sleep,
suddenly I’m terrified __ what am I doing?
Telling myself:
“You’re crazy to write this!”
“You’re crazy to attack such a thing!”
“You’re crazy to criticize such and such a person.”
“You’re crazy to contest such an authority, be it textual, institutional or personal.”
Panic of subconscious

Imagine singular child doing: horrible.
Freud → childhood dreams: nakedness

Here with Half Sleep: impressions ↔

I shouldn’t do.
Half Sleep telling me:
“But you’re mad to have done that.”
Half Sleep … Convincing.
Implied command:
“Stop everything! Take it back! Burn your papers!”
“What you are doing is inadmissible!”
But I ascend from Half Sleep.

Meaning, or interpret: in supposed awake, conscious, working –
I’m certainly more unconscious than with Half Sleep.
When Half Sleep is there: in vigilance –

Telling me: I’m doing → very serious!
In awakeness and working:
Vigilance is sleeping.
Vigilance is not stronger than Awakness.
And so I do what must be done.

I never explain my poems as I do not believe their meaning is static but personal and evolving. Whatever meaning you arrive at from the poetry is what the poem means.

Consuming Ourselves to Death

Consuming Ourselves to Death

We are consuming ourselves to death. What more is there to say?

We buy useless crap that we don’t need, made by slave labour in far off countries, ship it around the globe, spewing carbon as we go, all so we can maintain an economic system which is dependant on useless consumption. Rather than living in a symbiotic relationship with our planet’s ecology, we humans, we divine beings with an edict from God, dominate our pathetic planet, and our fellow humans, so that we can consume ourselves to death in some orgiastic cluster fuck of corporate manufactured happiness!

There is consuming, which is antagonistic to ecology and the planet; and there is subsisting which allows the planet and humanity to flourish into infinity.

But we can’t subsist because that would cause an economic collapse in which the Capitalist Aristocracy would no longer be able to brain wash us into willing slaves through a Panoptic nightmare. So keep consuming! If you don’t Capitalism, and life as you know it, will collapse …

although some of us see that as a good thing …

——————————————–

This sign, along with the other one posted on Hastings, lasted about 1 week. The Capitalist Aristocracy made sure to clean up such distasteful messaging very quick. After all, we cannot have people putting up signs which do not support the capitalist metanarrative of consumption and PROFIT. I am actually rather depressed about this one. I quite liked this sign. It was not hurting human being by being up; however, businesses and corporations might have had their profits ever so slightly reduced. And we can’t have that now can we?

Not to worry folks, Coal Harbour, DTES and Yaletown have been swept clean of any non-corporate altruistic signs. Only that “fucking” (to use an adjective from Mayor Gregor Robertson) West End has kept their evil signs up.

Are We Free? Or Chained in Poverty?

Are We Free? Or Chained In Poverty?

I thought this sign up in response to a Bob Marley song I was listening to while traveling on the bus. The lyric goes: “Today they say that we are free / Only to be chained in poverty”. While this song specifically is in reference to the slaves of the colonial powers, I think there is some pertinence to society’s situation in general. In a certain sense this references my other sign “Debt Slaves“. We reside in the illusion of freedom yet we are all slaves to the mechanistic capitalist production machine. They tell us that we are free, increasing our “quality of life” (a “quality” which is manufactured and indoctrinated within us), through free trade and a 40 hour work week (except for all that overtime we work). Yet the truth is we are not free but chained in poverty as debt slaves to capitalism’s aristocratic class who fence themselves in with a police state. Time and time again it has been revealed that “free” trade, globalization, conglomeration and centralization has sucked the life and wealth out of all but the Capitalist Aristocracy: StatsCan – http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/75-001-x/11206/9543-eng.htm; OECD – http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/44/48/41525292.pdf; Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives – https://www.policyalternatives.ca/sites/default/files/uploads/publications/National_Office_Pubs/2007/Rising_Profit_Shares_Falling_Wage_Shares.pdf.

In the words of Bob Marley, “I think it’s illiteracy; its only a machine that makes money”. We have become the machines, or the unemployed, of the Capitalist Aristocracy; and we are too bloody illiterate, completely brainwashed and indoctrinated, to realize the state that we are in. So we continue to consume and increase our debt to the elites.

The Capitalist Aristocracy loans us the money so we can buy their useless crap in the hopes we will find happiness in the “freedom” to spend/consume ourselves into oblivion; and in this freedom we truly become debt slaves, chained in poverty.

So my question is: Are we free? Or just chained in poverty?

Slave Driver
By: Bob Marley

Ooh-ooh-oo-ooh. Oo-oo-ooh! Oo-oo-ooh.
Slave driver, the table is turn; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn, now. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire: gonna get burn. (catch a fire) Wo, now!

Ev’rytime I hear the crack of a whip,
My blood runs cold.
I remember on the slave ship,
How they brutalize the very souls.
Today they say that we are free,
Only to be chained in poverty.
Good God, I think it’s illiteracy;
It’s only a machine that makes money.

Slave driver, the table is turn, y’all. Ooh-ooh-oo-ooh.

Slave driver, uh! The table is turn, baby, now; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn, baby, now. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn, y’all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire: so you can get burn, now. (catch a fire)

Ev’rytime I hear the crack of a whip,
My blood runs cold.
I remember on the slave ship,
How they brutalize the very soul.

O God, have mercy on our souls!
Oh, slave driver, the table is turn, y’all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire, so you can get burn. (catch a fire)
Slave driver, the table is turn, y’all; (catch a fire)
Catch a fire … [fadeout]

This sign lasted about a week. It is interesting to note that the signs in the West End have been up now for over two weeks yet signs within major routes coming in and out of the city are barely tolerated for a week. While I doubt many, if any, of the citizens of the DTES minded my signs there are obviously those who feel that such critical posing questions are not acceptable within the “public space” of Vancouver. While I was not posting anything for profitable gain (that is the accumulation of more capital), certain members of the Vancouver public believe that my messaging is unacceptable. It would seem that posting non-corporate for profit signs is unacceptable everywhere in the Downtown Core of Vancouver but the West End. In Vancouver you must compel people to consume and not post anything which might disrupt this message. Remember, we are now the “Green Capital” of the world; watch us world as we consume ourselves out of this ecological crisis. Whatever you do, DO NOT STOP BUYING THINGS!!!

Debt Slaves

Debt Slaves

These pictures were taken with my iPhone because I neglected to bring my other camera when I posted these. The next day, at around 1pm, I went back to take pictures of this sign and it was already taken down. I posted this on Sunset Beach in the West End across from where Burnaby St. and Beach Ave. intersect. I did this on July 23rd, Friday night (Saturday morning) right before the Celebration of Light would be performed. This of course is a central point from which to view the Celebration of Light and is where all the business set up to sell food and other things. In other words, it is the commercial centre for the Celebration of Light on the beach. Thus such signs would not be tolerated as it might interfere with maximizing levels of consumption. Possibly patrons would increase their debt load in order to continue consuming. Even though this is detrimental to society and ecology.

The main point of this sign is that debt is enslaving us to the Capitalist Aristocracy. Not just personal debt but also governmental debt. Sadly our entire economy runs on a debt structure. This is problematic for two reasons: 1. It necessitates capitalism’s infinite expansion methodology; 2. It makes society into the slaves of debt, unable to control their future but controlled by their future of debt.

For corporations, governments and citizens to pay off debt they need to expand faster than the interest on those debts. So, for example, say a corporation incurs debt at 10% in order to start a business. That business must gain a return of at lest 10.1% in order to pay off the interest and principle of the debt (at which point I would only be paying off 0.1% of the principle). If I desire to make a profit (the sole motivation of capitalism) then I must gain a return, or expand my margins, much greater than 10%. In which case it is incumbent on me to get as many people to consume my product regardless of whether it is good, effective or even useful. The best way to do this is have the consumers incur debt debt to buy the product. If the Corporate Aristocracy did not foster a debt consumption environment like this, there is no way the economy would have enough consumption power to consume what is needed to “service” the debts incurred (i.e. to at lest pay the interest with no principle payments). What happens when society is collectively unable to service their debt? The economic collapse of 2008. Suddenly, the web of debt, which is suffocating everyone, starts to collapse under the weight of itself. Yet do not fear, the Capitalist Aristocracy has a plan, more fuckin’ debt. That’s right, society and the corporations cannot continue the debt train but sovereign nations can. If sovereign nations can accumulate more debt (in other words: manufacture money) the consumption train will continue unimpeded. In the words of George W. Bush:

“Letting Americans keep more of their money should Increase consumer spending,” (Tax cuts = government debt; however, Conservatives love to frame the dialogue as “your money” rather than our collective resource. Individualization fragments society and inhibits a collective outlook which is detrimental to the Capitalist Aristocracy).
“Americans can Spend this money as they see fit: to help meet their monthly bills, cover higher costs at the gas pump, pay for other basic necessities,” (JUST DON’T PAY OFF DEBT, and if you can, incur more debt so that you can CONSUME!!)
“[The GROWTH package is] our most pressing economic priority.”
“Consumer spending is still Growing, but the housing market is declining. Business investment and exports are still Rising, but the cost of imported oil has increased.”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22725498/

Notice how none of this has to deal with debt reduction, the very problem at hand. All of it is about getting you to consume more shit. They don’t care how, just what ever you do: DON’T BLOODY WELL STOP CONSUMING!!!!

Welcome to ecocidal capitalism.

The IMF wants to shore up shaky public confidence, in other words: consume, consume, consume! (http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2010/07/08/imf-canada-forecast.html). We must grow, we must expand, we must consume because we are all fuckin’ slaves to debt!

I thought I would not only take a picture of this one post, but also of the surrounding area. It is interesting to see how my text within the landscape interacts with its surrounding. While walking down the corridor I encountered another text, “Speak English”. This langauge has harsh undertones of racism, ethnocentrism and bigotry. It is in direct contradiction to the Ecological Collectivist Union philosophy. For the EcoCollectivist, a diversity of language reveals a healthy society. Language is the medium through which we formulate our reality. Thus, the more access to language one has, the broader ones reality. As such we advocate for a bilingual+ community. By bilingual+ we mean that our society should endeavour to have every citizen speak at lest two or more languages, French or otherwise.

As you move on out of the corridor you are confronted with Vancouver’s tallest building the Shangri-La Hotel. Across the street is a sanctioned art installation organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery. Next to this is the high-end grocery store: Urban Fare.

There are multiple texts conversing on multiple levels. You have the sanctioned text: Shangri-La, Vancouver Art Gallery and Urban Fare. You have the unsanctioned text: My posts and “Speak English”.

Each text speaks individually. The Shangri-La speaks of opulence and man dominating the sky and landscape with the tallest buildings they can erect; the Vancouver Art Gallery exhibit, by Ken Lum, “calls into question the relationship between modernism and everyday lived experience” and represents a legitimate and peer-reviewed artistic expression; the Urban Fare expresses upper class consumerist culture. Amongst all this is the dissident messaging of a bigot: “Speak English”; and language challenging the dominant Capitalist narrative.

Here are copies of what was posted in the corridor:

Kilowatt Hours
EcoEconomy vs Green Capitalism
Decrease in Farmers
360,000,000
112 Species
63.7 Percent of Commuters
15.6 Million Tons GHG
1.75 Billion Liters

I posted 5 copies of each statistic throughout the downtown core of Vancouver. That is a grand total of 40 postings. I posted in the West End, Yaletown, Downtown, Coal Harbour and in this corridor along Georgia St. The corridor posting is the only place where I posted every single one in succession. It gives a holistic impression of the narrative constructed throughout the streets of Vancouver by these statistics.

As of this afternoon, Monday, July 19th, 2010, the signs in the most trafficked areas of Vancouver, which were on municipal property, were taken down. More interesting is that these were also the areas most inundated with corporate/consumer messaging. It appears the city is more concerned with the sanitization of touristy/consumption/trafficked areas then with those that are not. Additionally, most, if not all, signs which were not on municipal property were still up.

Deconstruct Reality / Reconstruct Ecology

Our society lives in a world of message bombardment. We are continually and viciously inundated with language/image/media which supports a singular narrative. Other contrasting or oppositional narratives are suppressed under the guise of private property. However, even more troubling, this inhibits the ability for change within a society. Much like in an Orwellian nightmare, the metanarrative defining structure is centralized and controlled by our Aristocratic Class: IMF, World Bank, WTO, G8, G20, etc. Anything which does not maintain or support the metanarrative they structure is quickly demeaned and discounted by all pundits and economic elites. The masses, through a cacophony of pleasure, instituted apathy, centralization, homogenization and destruction of the commons, have entered into, and maintain, their own enslavement within this superstructure. In other words, society has descended into a Foucaultian panoptic nightmare. Reality itself has been hijacked, through the bombardment of a singular narrative, and we are trapped within an ecocidal relationship with the planet. Thus we must deconstruct our reality in order to save ourselves and current biodiversity. The Ecological Collectivist Union is here to challenge all dominant metanarratives, including itself, through what Nietzsche defined as the transvaluation of all values. Within our context this means that we must transvaluate how we define value. Currently, within our capitalist neo-liberal nightmare, the only thing of value is Capital. The Ecological Collectivist Union challenges Capitalist assumptions; The Union desires to integrate an ecological concept of value which includes our environment/ecology, locality, community, family, art/music/culture, diversity, multiculturalism, language and science rather than the narcissistic, homogenized and antisocial Capital. Thus the Ecological Collectivist Union’s purpose is to deconstruct society’s reality so that we can reconstruct a true ecology.

Our society needs to transvaluate their core ideas about humanity and nature. Firstly we need to redefine the signifier “nature”. In other words we need to reconstruct the signified’s relationship to the signifier: Nature. Currently, within the popular conscience of society, this word is meaningless and is usually seen to be in opposition to humanity; specifically within Abrahamic based religion where nature is conceived of as “evil” or “worldly”. Sadly this conception of nature is, to use a Nietzschean term, hostile to life. Rather, in The Union’s view, nature is the asomatous interdependency of all beings, it extends from the beginning of time toward the evolutionary future and incorporates the smallest of particles, like the Higgs Boson, to the immense conception of the multiverse. Nature is within us and we are within nature. Such a definition invariably brings us into connection with the infinite. I do not mean this in any theological way; rather, we are forced into incomprehensibility, into the infinite. Far from demeaning humanity, this concept of an evolutionary interdependence of nature reaffirms that we are one of natures great achievements. Within this boundlessness, this measureless darkness, spins a blue planet in which nature has birthed biological “AI” . Moreover, within this conception there is no reason not to believe that biological units are strewn throughout the universe/multiverse. Our collective existence, and I say this in the broadest of senses, are all connected to the same quantum fluctuations which nature created in the Big Bang. To be true this view of nature at times degenerates into pantheism, yet I do not believe it is incompatible with atheism or agnosticism. One might argue that this definition of “nature” is inherently religious or spiritual. Although I would disagree on the characterization of religious, it would be harder for me to disagree with the spiritual. This definition is not religious in that it does not impose any dogmatic and metaphysically based precepts. Hence this explication of nature finds its root in the sciences and is subject to changes within scientific discovery. Within regards to the spiritual I would argue that there is no difference between the supernatural and the natural. Our platonic conceptions of this division between natural and supernatural should give way to more primal/indigenous understandings of holistic integration. For more on redefining the concept of nature please read our page: A Conceptual Evolution of our All Too Human Species.

The Ecological Collectivist Union endeavours to deconstruct society’s dominant reality through guerilla action and subversive language/images which kill the old god (metanarrative) and create free spirits who are fearless.

———————————————————-

“Indeed, we philosophers and ‘free spirits’ feel, when we hear the news that ‘the old god is dead,’ as if a new dawn shone on us; our heart overflows with gratitude, amazement, premonitions, expectations. At long last the horizon appears free to us again, even if it should not be bright; at long last our ships may venture out again, venture out to face any danger; all the daring of the lover of knowledge is permitted again; the sea, our sea, lies open again; perhaps there has never yet been such an ‘open sea’” (Nietzsche, The Gay Science).

Extricate from Capitalism / Engage in EcoCollectivism

Extricate from Capitalism / Engage in EcoCollectivism

Engage in EcoCollectivism / Extricate from Capitalism

The initial picture is where I first placed these signs (on the Davie Village Garden, Davie & Burrard). They stayed up till the afternoon when someone from the garden took the signs down. Interestingly though they stashed them in the back of the garden. So I decided to “recycle” them and put them up at the Dog Park in Nelson Park on Bute St. While the exposure would not be as large or diverse, Bute St. is one of the main thoroughfares through the West End for West Enders. I like the first picture because these people were obviously tourists and were contemplating the meaning of the sign in relation to the garden.

I must say, it was nice of the people from the garden to not ruin my signs but put them nicely in the back. And so I reposted the signs up at the dog park Friday night in the hopes that they would not be taken down till Monday or later; additionally, there was the West End Farmer’s Market on Saturday which helped me gain lots of West End exposure.

I did contemplate the use of the word “Exricate”. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Extricate as: “To disentangle (a person or thing); to disengage, set free from, out of (anything that entangles, a state of confinement, difficulty, or entanglement)”. While this is not a commonly used word, and may perplex some people, I desired to use the word for its appropriate definition and its perplexing quality. Additionally, a reader could ascertain, from a contextual basis, what Extricate actually meant; it might also spur them to look up the word thus furthering their interaction with the statement and educational experience. Moreover, technically the word is used wrong. Proper usage would be: Extricate *subject* (humanity/society/economy/etc) from Capitalism. I chose to do this so that, in effect, the reader becomes the subject within the statement. Engage *yourself* in EcoCollectivism / Extricate *yourself* from Capitalism. There is an immediacy and self-involvement in the language.

Ultimately the message is straight forward in that we should remove our societies from Capitalism and enter into an ecological relationship with our planet. If you desire more information please read: EcoCollectivism: A New Economic Dialectic.
